What is an FAQ?
- A page of Frequently Asked Questions
[edit]
What is Coppermine?
- Coppermine is a picture-presentation software package that allows people to upload pictures to a Website to be viewed on the Internet. It allows multiple users to upload and maintain multiple picture albums and store the originals safely on a remote server.
[edit]
Is there a cost?
- No
[edit]
I can't understand how the albums are arranged!
- On the main page, everybody's albums are listed under Category > User Galleries
[edit]
How do I see the pictures in an album?
- On the Coal River Pictures home page, click on a picture. This takes you to a page listing all that person's albums. Typically there will only be one, but they may have more.
- Decide which album you want to see and click on the picture itself or the album name.
[edit]
I can't see all the pictures in an album, just one page.
- Once you have a user's first page of pictures up (these little pictures are called "thumbnails"), go to the bottom right corner of the page and click on the page number where you want to go.
[edit]
I have requested membership, but have never been approved.
- Anyone in the world can view all the pictures on Coalriverpix.com, but to keep hackers and vandals out, Coalriverpix.com is only approving membership (which means the ability to upload pictures to the site) for people that are known to us, or known to one of our current members. If your real name is not obvious from your requested username, (for example, cfpy1234), you will probably get a polite email from Coalriverpix.com asking you to tell us a little about yourself. If there is no response, that membership request will be deleted.
If you are a friend_of_a_friend, that's fine - just tell us who you are and you will be able to upload pictures as soon as we know you are one of the good guys.
[edit]
What happens to the pictures if the site goes down?
- The site is being run on a server leased from Slicehost.com. A full backup of the site is done every day, with the two previous days' backups available as well for restoring the site.
[edit]
I have several versions of each picture available. Which one should I upload?
- Upload the picture file with the highest resolution. This will usually be the largest one.
[edit]
Should I keep the originals?
- Definitely.
[edit]
What if I'm trying to upload my pictures and get confused and break the Website?
- Can't happen. There is nothing you can do that can't be fixed. The best way to learn is by rolling up your sleeves and jumping right in. If you get stuck, we'll help you. No big deal. Everybody starts out as a beginner.
- (Don't tell anybody--when I started this site, I got confused and deleted the whole thing. Fortunately, only the owner has the power to make such dumb mistakes. heheee....) Jim
[edit]
I'm kind of intimidated by this whole process. Can I get help uploading my pictures?
- Yep. Just email me at the address at the top of the page and I'll send you a phone number; we will set up a time, and I'll walk you through the whole process. If it is still confusing, we'll arrange for you to send me the pictures and I'll upload them into your album for you.
[edit]
What will happen to the pictures eventually?
- The plan is, once we get enough pictures, we will burn CD's or DVD's with all the pictures on the site and mail them out to everyone who has uploaded files.
[edit]
What if someone has uploaded my picture and I don't like it?
- Please upload only pictures with the consent of the subject being photographed. If we get a legitimate complaint from the subject of a picture, we will take it down. See the top of this page for administrator contact information.
[edit]
Who are these people?
- Every picture on the thumbnail page will have two sets of information: a title, which will be the first line below the picture, and a general description, which will be below that. To see additional information, such as individual names, click on the thumbnail picture. A magnified picture will appear. In the upper left corner is a small "i" in a blue circle. Clicking on this will turn the names and any additional information on and off. You will probably have to scroll down the page to see it.
[edit]
How do I magnify the pictures?
- Click on it. To magnify further, click again. Some of the second magnified pictures are very large, but we are leaving them that way for now, so you can see as much detail as possible. Some are rotated; we're working on that.

What are the plans for the future of Coalriverpix.com?
- We have been working on several ideas: Firstly, there have been a lot of requests for messaging ability, so members can exchange ideas and information about the various pictures. In order to do this, we have installed a bulletin board program that can be accessed by a single click (Bulletin Board!). This is up and running, but I don't plan to open it to the public until I am sure of security. Websites like coalriverpix.com are designed to be accessible to everybody on the planet, and as such are ripe targets for spammers and vandals.
- Secondly, we have installed a blog, again accessible by a single click (Blog!). Here is where the administrators can post articles of general interest and can keep everybody updated on news and improvements. Comments are welcome there; we have installed reCaptcha, a simple tool that allows everybody to comment, but excludes the spammers and robots from using it as a forum to sell sleeping pills and Viagra. (It looks like America's top priorities are to have sex and fall asleep...) <grin> The blog software allows us to have a "blogroll," which is simply a list of other blogs we think are important or interesting, as well as a "links list," which is a list of other Websites we think are whiffy. (http://www.marshfork.com/ immediately comes to mind.)
- Thirdly, I would love to be able to display genealogy information, (family trees, etc.) but haven't found anything that lets multiple people work on it from the Web, in order to share their data with everybody. (As of right now, probably the best thing is to link to Ancestry.com, which is under consideration.)
- Finally - without a doubt, the best preservation of Coal River life is on the Library of Congress' Website, Tending the Commons. If you haven't seen it, it's really something. It is the result of several years' work by Mary Hufford and others, and has a lot of voice files by people long gone. We plan to link to some of it when appropriate.
- If you have ideas, email me at the address given at the top of this page. We're trying to preserve some of the old days on Coal River. We aren't proud; we'll steal anybody's idea to make this site better!!
